The I-90 express lanes going to and from Seattle are now permanently closed to vehicle traffic to allow for light rail construction. A new carpool lane going east and west has been added. These new lanes have been added to what were previously the lane shoulders, making for limited to no area for cars to pullover if they have problems.

The closure of the express lanes are due to Sound Transit constructing the 14-mile East Link light rail extension from Seattle to Redmond. East Link is planned to open in 2023. The project includes 10 new light rail stations connecting Seattle, Mercer Island, Bellevue and Overlake.

The express lane closure coupled with the recent South Bellevue Park & Ride closure will both contribute to I-90 congestion.

Single rider drivers are encouraged to carpool, take public transportation, or use ride share services such as Scoop that helps people carpool together.

  1. Really looking forward to the east link!

  2. How long will express lanes be shut down?

  3. “How long will express lanes be shut down?”

It says permanently in both the headline and the first sentence, so I’m thinking that’s a really long time.

  4. I never would have voted for ST2 if I had all the facts. What a scam!

  5. ^Perhaps read next time? Nothing was hidden.

Looking forward to having a reliable way to get back and forth to Seattle, wish we could take two lanes from the 520 bridge for reliable rail as well.
