Japonessa in Downtown Bellevue.
Sushi with a Latin accent, a twice-daily happy hour, and a heated patio at the W Bellevue’s front door — the loudest, easiest sushi night at Lincoln Square since 2017.
Japonessa is the sushi bar you go to for a night out rather than a hushed omakase — a big, bright room on the ground floor of Lincoln Square South, its sushi bar running down the middle and its covered, heated patio opening onto the W Bellevue’s valet drive. The menu is sushi first, with a Latin accent that shows up as jalapeño-lime glaze on the rolls, habanero pickles on the tacos, and a cocktail list that leans tequila. It is loud, it is friendly, and the happy hour runs twice a day.
Seattle restaurateur Billy Beach announced a second Japonessa for the Lincoln Square expansion in early 2015 — DBN had the story — and the doors opened in July 2017 with the sushi bar front and center. The patio, built covered and heated from day one, has been on our outdoor-dining lists ever since, and nine years on the room is still a Restaurant Week regular each spring and fall.
For a precise, chef-led sushi progression, Takai by Kashiba down Bellevue Way is the counter; for a group that wants a table for eight, big rolls, and a second round of drinks, this is the room. Where each fits is in our guide to the best Japanese restaurants in downtown Bellevue.
What to Order at Japonessa
A long roll list with a Latin streak; these five are the ones the regulars keep on repeat.
Bellevue Roll
Eel, shrimp, and cucumber topped with tobiko and soy glaze — the roll named for the room, and the one to order first.
Wicked Sensation
Spicy tuna and cucumber under a layer of tuna and a jalapeño-lime glaze. Gluten-free, and the clearest expression of the sushi-meets-Latin idea.
Mexican Ninja
Spicy tuna crowned with shrimp, tuna, salmon, and yellowtail in garlic ponzu — the big showpiece roll a group orders to share.
Seven Spice Tuna Tataki
Seared tuna with jalapeño, onion, garlic ponzu, and cilantro aioli. Order it while the table argues over rolls.
Salmon Karaage Tacos
Crispy salmon in lettuce-wrap tacos with habanero-pickled onion and spicy avocado cream — the plate that proves the cocina half of the name.

Getting There & When to Go
Lincoln Square South is the easiest sushi night in downtown to reach by car, sky bridge, or train.
Getting There & Parking
- Drive: Lincoln Square South garage. Weekdays, get your ticket validated at the restaurant for 3 hours free; evenings and weekends no validation is needed. Bellevue Square’s free garages are across Bellevue Way by sky bridge.
- Light rail: 2 Line to Bellevue Downtown Station, then a roughly 12-minute walk west along NE 6th to Bellevue Way — see our light rail guide
- On foot: The main entrance is on Bellevue Way at street level; the patio entrance is around the corner by the W Bellevue valet. From Bellevue Square, cross Bellevue Way at NE 6th or take the sky bridge and come down through Lincoln Square South.
Best Times to Go
The early happy hour is the local move and the busiest bar of the day; the late-night window is the quiet one. Weekend dinners book several days out — reserve, or aim for the walk-in tables the restaurant holds back and expect a short wait. Patio season is the draw in summer and the heaters keep it going well into fall.
Make It a Night
You are on the Bellevue Way side of the Collection: pair the sushi with a movie at Cinemark Reserve in the same building, the best happy hours downtown if you are building a crawl, or Snowflake Lane in the holidays, right outside on Bellevue Way.
Good to Know
As of August 2026: OpenTable reservations plus held walk-in tables and a first-come bar; groups of 7 or more use the request form on the official site, and patio parties larger than 6 should call ahead. The covered, heated patio seats groups of 2 to 10. Happy hour runs twice daily. Catering is available, and there is a chef’s omakase at several price tiers for the table that would rather not choose.
