It was recently announced that the proposed Kroger-Albertsons merger will result in the sale of many grocery stores, including those in Bellevue. A total of 124 stores under Kroger and Albertsons brands will be affected. Kroger, which owns QFC and Fred Meyer, and Albertsons, which owns Safeway and Haggen, are planning to sell these stores. To gain regulatory approval for their $25 billion merger, the two companies have offered to sell their stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers, a company based in New Hampshire.
In Bellevue, five stores will be sold. This includes two QFC locations in Downtown Bellevue: one at 10116 NE 8th Street and another at 2636 Bellevue Way NE. Other QFC stores affected are located at 3550 Factoria Blvd SE, 15600 NE 8th St, and 1510 145th Pl SE.
C&S Wholesale Grocers is primarily a wholesaler with limited retail operations. They own the Piggly Wiggly supermarket chain, which operates mainly in the Southern and Midwestern United States. The company is headquartered in Keene, New Hampshire.
Nationwide, the merger will lead to the sale of 579 stores. In a joint statement, the CEOs of Kroger and Albertsons claimed that the sales will result in lower prices and more choices for customers. Albertsons CEO Vivek Sankaran said, “The agreement creates an even more competitive landscape. Their deep industry knowledge and experience give us great confidence in their ability to become even fiercer competitors moving forward.”
Kroger and Albertsons first announced their merger plans in 2022, and the sale of hundreds of stores was anticipated due to their overlapping markets. The specific locations affected were only recently revealed.

When are the stores closing?
Closing? Or just changing owners? Pretty ridiculous if closing, as where will people shop. All these stores in Bellevue at least, are fairly busy.
They’re NOT closing. They’re being divested. Insane clickbait chasing false rumors.
This article is completely misleading. These stores are not closing. They are being sold/divested to another grocery company who will resume operations of these stores, most likely still under the QFC name. Good grief this is awful “journalism”.
I don’t think these are all closing. At least according to all the other articles. It’s our understanding the stores are sold (so changing ownership) but not necessarily closing.
It is disingenuous to think that with less competition prices will come down! The possibility of another chain buying these stores doesn’t mean they’ll remain open.
C&S Wholesale Grocers Is know to purchase chains and close them afterwards just as they did with Olean Wholesale Grocery in NY, PA, and Ohio.
The problem is they are being sold to a company who is very small compared to Safeway and Kroger and you can expect lower quality and higher prices. We will lose most QFC, Fred Meyer and Safeway stores on the Eastside to a new owner if this merger goes through. Check the list.

Safeway is the worst.
I remember purchasing shrimp from Safeway and after a couple days of trying to cook the shrimp it was smelling like Ammonia . I was so scared . I ended up throwing it away. The seafoods of Krogers are horrible . When I purchased their salmon it was not good at all. The quality was horrible.
Now I have changed to traders joes and sometimes wholefoods it just makes sense . Yes it is expensive but quality is great and super awesome
These stores will become Piggly Wiggly’s. I deliver to the one on Pearl Street in Tacoma. The article stated that they were bought by the company that owns and operates Piggly Wiggly. I was also told this by the ICC clerk that signs my invoices. You’re welcome. Also no time had been given yet on when the changes will happen.
