REI Bellevue in Downtown Bellevue.
The co-op came back to Bellevue in 2016 with a 40,000-square-foot store on the second level of the center at 116th and NE 4th — just east of downtown across I-405, with a full bike shop and the Eastside’s closest Re/Supply used-gear rack.
REI Bellevue is the co-op’s Eastside store at 410 116th Ave NE, on the second level of Bellevue Central Shopping Center at the northeast corner of 116th and NE 4th Street — just east of downtown Bellevue across I-405, sharing the center with Trader Joe’s and HomeGoods. It is a full-line REI: camping and hiking, cycling with a staffed repair shop, kayaking and watersports, footwear, packs and bags, fitness and clothing, with curbside pickup and buy-online-pick-up-in-store. The ski and snowboard shop runs in season, and the Re/Supply program puts trade-ins and lightly used gear on the floor for members.
DBN followed the store from the May 2015 lease filings — REI, Trader Joe’s and HomeGoods signed on to a roughly 75,000-square-foot center with a two-story garage, on parcels the city had rezoned for a Target that never came — through the September 2015 announcement that the co-op would close Redmond Town Center and return to Bellevue, where it had opened its second Washington store in 1984 before decamping to Redmond in 1998, to the September 2016 opening and grand-opening weekend. The Bellevue thread continued off the sales floor: the co-op’s nearly finished Spring District headquarters was sold to Facebook for $390 million in 2020 before REI ever moved in, while the 116th Ave NE store carried on.
It is the store for the weekend that starts at a trailhead and the bike that needs a tune before it: the biggest outdoor floor on this side of the lake. For the stores inside the downtown core, browse the downtown Bellevue shopping directory.
What You’ll Find at REI Bellevue
A full-line co-op store: camping and hiking, cycling, paddling and footwear, plus the shops and services that make it a destination rather than a stop.
Camping & Hiking
The core of the store: tents, packs, sleeping bags, stoves and trail footwear for the Cascades season, with co-op staff to fit you into it. Packs and bags and footwear get their own departments on the rei.com store page.
Full-Service Bike Shop
A full bike retailer with a staffed repair shop — tune-ups, flat repair and component work on road, mountain, hybrid and e-bikes. rei.com lists a 20 percent member discount on cycle-shop services.
Re/Supply Used Gear & Trade-In
Members can shop lightly used gear and apparel on the floor and trade in clean, working gear for credit on an REI gift card. Selection changes by the day, which is the point.
Ski & Snowboard Shop
Winter gear and clothing plus professional tuning, waxing and repairs when the shop is in season; rei.com marks it seasonally closed through the warm months, so check the store page before hauling skis over.
Kayaking & Watersports
Kayaks, paddleboards, PFDs and the car racks to carry them — rei.com lists kayaking, watersports and car racks among this store’s departments, and Lake Washington is a short drive west.
Where it sits on price: Premium. REI carries top-brand gear at specialty-retail prices and the price tag is the price tag; what softens it is the co-op model — a one-time lifetime membership that unlocks member pricing on shop services, trade-in credit and the Re/Supply used-gear section for the budget version of the same kit.
REI Bellevue Through the Years on DBN
DBN has reported on downtown Bellevue since 2005. This is REI Bellevue’s story as we covered it, as it happened.
Shopping Center at 116th in Bellevue Names REI, Trader Joe’s, HomeGoods to be Tenants
Lease filings with King County named REI, Trader Joe’s and HomeGoods for a nearly 75,000-square-foot center at NE 4th and 116th with a two-story, 309-stall garage — on parcels the city had rezoned for a Target that never came.
REI Announces Formal Plans to Open Store in Bellevue
The co-op confirmed it would close Redmond Town Center and take 40,000 square feet on the center’s second level in fall 2016, returning to a city where it had opened its second Washington store in 1984 before moving to Redmond in 1998.
REI Bellevue Now Open
The store opened on the second floor of Bellevue Central Shopping Center with a grand-opening weekend of classes, food and door prizes, ahead of Trader Joe’s and HomeGoods in the same complex.
Facebook Purchases REI’s Bellevue Spring District Headquarters for $390M
Off the sales floor, the co-op sold its nearly finished Spring District campus — 400,000 square feet on six acres — to Facebook before ever moving in; the 116th Ave NE store carried on unchanged.

Getting There & When to Go
The store sits on the far side of I-405 from the downtown core, so most people drive; from downtown it is a short hop east on NE 4th or NE 8th.
Getting There & Parking
- Drive: The center’s own parking off 116th Ave NE (DBN’s 2015 coverage of the permits described a two-story, 309-stall garage for the complex); rei.com publishes no parking policy for this store, so there is no validation rule to plan around. From downtown, cross I-405 on NE 4th St and turn north on 116th, or take the NE 8th St exit from I-405 and head south.
- Light rail: 2 Line to Bellevue Downtown Station, then east on NE 4th St across the I-405 overpass to 116th Ave NE; or ride one stop farther to Wilburton Station at NE 8th St and 118th Ave NE and walk south and west to the center — see our light rail guide
- On foot: The store is on the second level of the center at 116th Ave NE and NE 4th St, with Trader Joe’s and HomeGoods in the same complex. From the downtown core it is a freeway-overpass walk on NE 4th or NE 8th rather than a stroll, which is why most shoppers pair it with the grocery run.
Best Times to Go
Weekend mornings bring the bike-shop drop-off crowd and the pre-trip shoppers; weekday afternoons are the calm window. Spring gear-up season and the run-up to the holidays are the busy stretches, and the ski shop’s reopening each fall draws its own line.
Make It a Day
You are east of the freeway, so the nearest DBN-profiled neighbors are just south or back across 405: try Bellevue Club Hotel south on 112th Ave SE when you are staying the night, Hilton Bellevue at 112th Ave SE off I-405, the closest hotel bed to the store, or Seastar back across 405 on 108th Ave NE for the seafood dinner.
Good to Know
