The City Council recently passed a a resolution to approve the use of a body-worn camera program for Bellevue Police. According to the City of Bellevue, the vote happened after the council was informed of further progress that was made in late 2021 toward implementing recommendations for police use of force policy improvements.

The City explained that Bellevue Police have been researching the program for about two years. A community meeting was held in early January, where 94% of participants were in favor of body-worn cameras for patrol offices.

The program would assist the department in complying with 2022 state law requiring certain police interviews to be audio and video recorded. Bellevue Police staff initiated a review of the department’s use of force policies in 2020. Bellevue then hired a third party consultant to conduct a comprehensive review of the department’s practices.

In late 2021, the department acknowledged 12 additional recommendations, to the already 32 of 47 that had been enacted.

To learn more about the details on the topic, the meeting agenda is now available.
