Bellevue Leaders Call City ‘Next-Level’ at State of the City

Years of deliberate planning and strong regional partnerships have pushed Bellevue to a “next-level” standing, Mayor Mo Malakoutian and Deputy Mayor Dave Hamilton said Tuesday during the city’s yearly State of the City address.

What earns the city that label, the two leaders explained, is the way long-term investment has started to pay off. Bellevue is increasingly viewed as a global hub for jobs and innovation, yet it has held onto the neighborhood character and “City in a Park” identity that residents value.

The leaders credited that balance to decisions made over many years rather than any single moment, pointing to sustained spending on transportation, housing, parks, and public safety that is now visible in completed projects instead of plans on paper.

The address took place at Meydenbauer Center, hosted alongside the Bellevue Downtown Association. The remarks repeatedly returned to the priorities steering the city’s direction: keeping it affordable and livable, well-connected and efficiently run, and open to creativity, economic diversity and innovation built around people.

“I am proud to tell you all, the state of our city is strong,” Malakoutian said in his remarks. “But to me, the real story is that Bellevue is progressing with purpose. Greener, safer, more affordable, more connected, more practical about growth. And I’m not saying we are perfect; we have our challenges. Housing is hard. Transportation is hard. Managing growth is hard. But Bellevue has something very important. We listen, we plan, we build, and we keep coming for the hard work.”

A question-and-answer session with Malakoutian and Hamilton followed the address. Both pointed to the city’s rising regional influence while acknowledging the pressures Bellevue shares with cities across the country, particularly housing and the cost of living, and described steady progress as the city applies the tools it has toward lasting solutions.

“I think there’s a pretty wide belief that Bellevue is having a moment and Bellevue is ascendant, and that’s not by accident,” Hamilton said. “I think it’s decades of thoughtful community investment – it’s purposeful and it’s consistent. We have invested in transportation, in housing, parks, and public safety. The projects we’ve planned are no longer on paper. They’re real, and they’re impacting people’s everyday lives.”

Several guest speakers took part as well, including a Bellevue high school senior who asked the mayor about housing and affordability. The leaders also highlighted the city’s collaborative work with local businesses and partner agencies throughout the region.
