Light rail service on Sound Transit’s 2 Line was down for most of the day on Saturday, June 21, due to a copper wire theft near Wilburton Station, as first reported by The Seattle Times.

According to a Sound Transit spokesperson, the wire was stolen around 2 a.m. Saturday. As a result, the 2 Line was unable to begin its scheduled morning service. While the line was shut down, buses replaced train service for riders along the route.

Repair crews worked throughout the day to address the issue, and service was restored by 2:40 p.m. after the missing cable was replaced.

Sound Transit is now working with King County sheriff’s deputies to investigate the theft. It’s still unclear whether the incident was caught on security cameras or how much the damage could cost the agency.

The 2 Line, which opened in April 2024, spans 6.5 miles and includes eight new stations serving Bellevue and Redmond. Stops along the route include South Bellevue, East Main, Bellevue Downtown, Wilburton, Spring District/130th, Overlake Village, and Redmond Technology.
