Marking a milestone in Bellevue’s 71-year legacy, Lynne Robinson has secured her third consecutive term as mayor, a first-time feat for any council-member in the city’s history. The decision was made unanimously at the City Council’s first session of the year held in early January.

Robinson was initially elected to the council in 2014. Her tenure has been marked by significant contributions, including her deputy mayorship in 2018 and 2019, followed by her mayoral victories in 2020 and 2022. Notably, her previous involvement on the Parks & Community Services Board, where she chaired from 2011 to 2013, showcased her commitment to community-centric governance.

The council’s unified vote also sealed newcomer Mo Malakoutian’s position as deputy mayor. Malakoutian, a senior program manager at Amazon, enters this role after a successful election to the council in November. His prior service on the Planning Commission for six years, including a term as chair, underscores his experience in civic leadership.

As mayor, Robinson’s responsibilities include leading council meetings and study sessions, steering the meeting agenda, representing the city at public events, and serving as the primary spokesperson for the council. Bellevue’s council-members are chosen at-large, followed by the council’s selection of a mayor and deputy mayor.

Bellevue operates under a council-manager governance model, where the seven-member council appoints a city manager to oversee all municipal operations. This election sets a precedent in Bellevue’s political landscape, displaying a continuity of leadership and shows the council’s trust in Robinson’s capabilities as a leader.
