Makkee Dessert, a Chinese dessert chain, is holding a soft opening at 10797 Main Street in Downtown Bellevue, marking the brand’s first location in Washington state. The preview runs through Wednesday, September 10, with service from noon to 4 p.m.
The shop sits on the retail level of the Surrey on Main apartments, in the storefront most recently occupied by Sugar n Flakes Bakery & Cafe, which has closed.
What Makkee Dessert Serves
Makkee specializes in Asian-style dessert soups and traditional sweets, served as bowls of jellies, beans, fruit and other toppings covered in milk. The menu leans on classic ingredients and creamy textures, and the chain markets its desserts as not overly sweet.
The Makkee Deluxe combines grass jelly, chewy taro and sweet potato balls, red beans, peach gum and lotus seeds, served with either fresh or oat milk. The Tapioca Deluxe pairs chewy tapioca pearls with peach gum, red beans, taro balls and lotus seeds in fresh milk. A third signature item, Mango Pomelo Sago, is a mango sweet soup made with pomelo and sago.
The brand is a rebranded version of Mai Ji Milk, a dessert company that operates roughly a thousand stores in China. Its U.S. shops are in Rowland Heights, San Gabriel, downtown Los Angeles, Irvine and Mountain View in California, along with Flushing in New York. Two more are planned, in San Jose and Brooklyn.
The Space Sugar n Flakes Left Behind
Sugar n Flakes had run its bakery and cafe in the Main Street space since July 2024, when it moved into Surrey on Main from a smaller storefront along Bellevue Way Northeast at Park Row.
That earlier location was in a strip mall Bosa Development bought in 2019 for $36 million and later cleared for a 22-story residential tower with 143 units, retail space and below-grade parking.
The Main Street move gave the bakery indoor seating and dining for the first time, plus room for a larger menu. Alongside its cakes, cupcakes, pastries and cookies, the expanded lineup added sandwiches and coffee.
