A study from the University of Washington, which KOMO news reported found the thinnest zip codes in King County were Mercer Island, Magnolia, Green Lake and our very own Bellevue!

More than 25 percent of residents in south King County were considered obese. Included in these areas are Renton, Kent, Auburn, Federal Way and Burien.

Some of the excuses made by others for the residents of these “thin” zip codes were that because these areas have more money they are able to purchase more healthy foods. A reason given for people being obese was because a person who is working two jobs doesn’t have time to eat anything but convenient fast food, which is usually cheaper and higher in fat and calories.

The fact of the matter is that if you care about your health, all it takes is some self-control, and some planning throughout the day. It doesn’t matter what zip code you live in to be healthy, as long as you make it a priority in your life, you can be “thin” in whichever zip code you please.

  1. I completely agree. Time for people to take personal accountability. However it is nice to know that people in Bellevue tend to have a healthier mindset. Just one more great reason to live here.

  2. …Or maybe it’s just that we can afford liposuction. 😉 j/k.

  3. I guess I have no excuse for being 20 pounds over, dang!

  4. I’ve got an idea for you…How about a UW study on which zip codes are too skinny!! I bet Bellevue would win this one too! 😉

  5. Lack of money impacts weight. Not just because of being limited to fast food, but because higher levels of stress will cause the human body to put on weight more easily (due to increased production of cortisol). Also, in the Puget Sound, the frequently wet weather can prevent poor people from getting outside to exercise, while rich people can spend a rainy day at the gym. Along similar lines, poor people can’t afford to partake in many activities, because they are too busy working or can’t afford the activities, even driving places that are free has become an expensive event because of gas prices. Rich people, on the other hand, can vacation and do winter sports and generally get exercise in many fun ways that are beyond the reach of the poor.

  6. Lol this is the only society in the world where the poorer people weigh MORE than the more affluent people. Something is terribly, terribly wrong with America. People aren’t getting married, they aren’t having kids, they take pride in material things rather than the societal lessons learned from hundreds of generations before as if that will provide anything substantial. You can try and take pride in what you have now but wiht a negative growth rate amongst certain ethnic/ income groups you’re going to weeded out through natural selection. I’m certainly in amazement that people who are “affluent” and take pride in being “skinny” are also apparently unattractive to people to want to have children with. How else do you explain the negative growth rate?
