This month, The Bellevue Collection, Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP), and local fashion designer Olayinka Ola are teaming up to offer a unique experience in honor of Black History Month. From February 20 to March 9, visitors to Bellevue Square will have the chance to explore installations that showcase Black fashion, art, and culture.
In partnership with designer Olayinka Ola of Ayo Collections, The Collection will feature Essence of the Peacock, a collection of garments inspired by African culture and the vibrant beauty of the peacock. The pieces will be displayed in frames around Bellevue Square.
“Olayinka’s artistry is truly breathtaking and is a beautiful display of her talent,” said Jennifer Leavitt, senior vice president of marketing for The Bellevue Collection. “The vibrant detail and craftsmanship in her designs are inspiring, and we couldn’t be happier that our guests can discover and enjoy her creations as they shop.”
Ola, originally from Nigeria and now based in Seattle, has gained recognition for her work in events such as Couture and Cars 2023, New York Fashion Week 2022 and 2024, and The Seattle Symphony’s Black Panther musical preshow in 2025.
“I’m excited to share my designs with the community and showcase my collection, The Essence of the Peacock,” said Ola. “It’s an honor to inspire others through fashion as they discover my designs, which celebrate creativity.”
Along with Ola’s fashion collection, MOPOP’s Icons of Style exhibit will be on display at Bellevue Square’s Center Court. This interactive digital experience highlights the influence of Black musicians on fashion, featuring icons like Jimi Hendrix, Cardi B, Lizzo, Beyoncé, and Doja Cat.
“Fashion is a powerful form of storytelling and a reflection of cultural identity, especially within Black pop culture,” said Michele Y.
