Local residents are invited to a “Play for All” Expo showcasing plans for a new playground at the Bellevue Downtown Park on Saturday.
The city aims to redesign and expand the park’s playground to accommodate children with disabilities. The “Inspiration Playground” will engage the senses with tactile sculptures and an interactive music plaza. The central “Whimsy Plaza” will include a Dr. Seuss-inspired tree sculpture.
Saturday’s Expo runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with entertainment and food vendors. The event will include:
- A welcome and playground project unveiling by Mayor Conrad Lee and Rotary Club President Robert Rose;
- Discovery stations and disability awareness booths, such as wheelchair basketball and free-throw shooting contests, a blind navigation challenge, wheelchair obstacle course, and video phone demonstrations;
- Scout activities, such as a blindfolded rope typing contest, blind tent pitching, and disability awareness merit badge class;
- Entertainment by the Bellevue Youth Theatre Glee Club, Seattle Hula Productions, and Bellevue High Jazz Band.
The Rotary Club of Bellevue and the city have partnered to raise $3.5 million to build the playground by 2015. To support the project, visit http://www.bellevuerotary.net/.
