In an effort to reduce the number of auto thefts happening in Bellevue and the surrounding areas, the Bellevue Police Department is offering free steering wheel locks this weekend, December 2, 2023, and December 3, 2023. This initiative follows the distribution of over 400 locks at previous events earlier this year.
“The rise in vehicle thefts is a concerning trend we’re actively addressing,” stated a spokesperson for the Bellevue Police Department. “Steering wheel locks serve as a powerful deterrent against these thefts.”
Two upcoming events have been scheduled for the distribution of these crucial anti-theft devices:
Saturday, December 2nd, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Location: Bellevue Police Factoria Police Substation
(Inside Factoria Mall, Next to Nordstrom Rack)
Sunday, December 3rd, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Location: Bellevue Police Crossroads Substation
(Crossroads Mall next to Planet Fitness)
Statistics reveal a large increase in vehicle thefts within the city. From January through October 2023, Bellevue has experienced a 29 percent uptick in vehicle thefts.
More alarming is the surge in thefts of vehicles manufactured by Kia and Hyundai. Reports received by the Bellevue Police Department indicate a jaw-dropping 762% increase in stolen Kia vehicles and a 730% surge in stolen Hyundai vehicles compared to the same timeframe last year. Specifically, the department received 69 stolen Kia reports and 83 stolen Hyundai reports during this period.
As a proactive measure, the Bellevue Police Department strongly advises owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles to take essential precautions:
- Ensure all recall work and software updates are promptly completed by an authorized dealer.
- Utilize a steering wheel lock to deter theft.
- Consider investing in an alarm system for added security.
- Install a tracking device, like an AirPod, to facilitate vehicle recovery.
“It’s crucial for owners of these vehicles to take proactive steps in safeguarding their property,” emphasized the Bellevue Police spokesperson.
Free steering wheel locks will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last, with a limit of one lock per person. The Bellevue Police Department encourages residents to seize this opportunity and take proactive measures to protect their vehicles against the escalating threat of theft.
