The Bellevue Transportation Department was honored with the 2024 Project of the Year Award by the American Public Works Association for their recent accomplishment. Their project enhances safety for pedestrians and commuters navigating to and from the Bellevue Transit Center.

As part of the project, the intersections of Northeast Sixth Street and 108th and 110th avenues were elevated to match the level of surrounding sidewalks. This adjustment also benefits the newly operational Sound Transit’s Link 2 line.

The award celebrates achievements in design and construction, acknowledging the collaborative efforts of public agencies, contractors, and consultants. Additionally, the Bellevue project secured the Project of the Year Award in the same category from the APWA Washington Chapter in early April 2024, specifically in the transportation projects under $5 million category.

“We’re honored to be recognized by APWA for this project and the hard work of our talented staff and contractor,” said Transportation Director Andrew Singelakis. “It reflects our commitment to innovation and inclusivity, providing safe and seamless connections for people walking downtown.”

The raised intersections serve to create a seamless connection with the sidewalk while enhancing visibility for pedestrians. They also play a role in encouraging safe driving speeds by reinforcing awareness of pedestrians crossing.

The improved intersections were completed at the end of 2023. Additionally, they support the Grand Connection, a pedestrian-focused corridor in downtown Bellevue.
