A major redevelopment project has been approved for the southeast corner of Bellevue Way SE and Main Street. The City of Bellevue has granted design review approval for a seven-story mixed-use residential building that will bring 376 market-rate apartments, ground-floor retail, and underground parking to the downtown area.

The new building will feature 15,026 square feet of active-use retail space at street level and three levels of below-grade parking with 438 stalls, including 338 reserved for residential use. The total gross floor area is approximately 322,294 square feet.

The redevelopment will take place on a site currently occupied by five older commercial buildings, including a strip mall, low-rise retail buildings, and the former Jack in the Box building, which currently houses Chawla’s Café. Chawla’s opened in 2024 following the closure of Racha Go, which had replaced the long-standing Jack in the Box fast-food restaurant that closed in 2019.

One of the buildings being replaced is the former home of Bellevue Animal Hospital, located at 1048 Main Street. The hospital had operated from the 1950s-era building for many years before relocating to a new Downtown Bellevue location in anticipation of the redevelopment. The original building was purchased by SRM Development in 2020 for $3.25 million.

The project will include two public outdoor plazas designed for pedestrian use and community enjoyment. One plaza, measuring 3,000 square feet, will front Bellevue Way SE and feature sculptural lighting elements. The second, located along Main Street at the intersection with 105th Avenue SE, will span 3,055 square feet and include public art, open paved areas, seating, and landscaping.

The site is located in Bellevue’s Downtown City Center South neighborhood. In 2020, SRM Development filed a land use code amendment to unify the site’s split zoning and allow for a single mixed-use development. The project has been designed by Runberg Architecture Group. No phasing is planned; construction will proceed as a single project.
